Painting the Luminous Landscape
Sarasota, FL
Registration through M Gallery of Fine Art
contact Chrystal or Maggie at akruger@mgalleryoffineart.com or 941-954-8774

This course is designed for intermediate to advanced oil painters, and will introduce students to the Tonalist landscape aesthetic and techniques. Tonalism, a distinct style of landscape painting which developed in the late 19th century, is experiencing a resurgence of interest today. It is characterized by simple design, a narrow range of values, a limited but luminous palette and an emphasis on atmospheric effects in the landscape, particularly during the hours of dawn, sunset, dusk and evening. In this course, we will explore the Tonalist style of painting- its art historical roots, aesthetic components, methods and materials and its application for the contemporary landscape painter.

Topics which we will cover include:
-edit and simplify the landscape for maximum effect

-create a strong under painting

-glaze and scumble to create luminosity

-choose and work with transparent colors

-create an interesting paint surface using a combination of opaque and transparent passages

-choose painting supports, tools and materials for indirect painting methods

Advanced Workshop and Mini Mentorship
April 25 - May1, 2010
Course given at my studio in Clarksville, TX
Limited to 5 artists 1 spot left !
$750 ($150 deposit)

This six and a half day program is for artists who have taken at least one of my online classes or a five day workshop and want to continue their study of the Tonalist aesthetic in a focused, intensive week of instruction and mentorship.
This week will include demonstrations and individual painting instruction based on each artist’s individual areas of interest or weakness. Each evening we’ll meet to look at slides or images of master works and explore a variety of topics related to painting, as well as the business side of art (pricing, showing, approaching galleries, marketing). We’ll also take some time to walk and observe the landscape. I’ve scheduled this for the week of the full moon, so there will be some moon watching as well! There will also be some unstructured time for each artist to work on your own either in the studio or outdoors.
Lodging: A guest house located about 1.5 miles from my home/studio is available. It is an old farmhouse which is now rented as a guest house. It’s simple, basic, clean and surrounded by fields, ponds and large oak trees (It’s called The Oaks). It sleeps 4, 5 if a cot or air mattress are brought in; full kitchen and one bath. It’s a cost effective lodging alternative which might also foster camaraderie for the group. There is also a nice B&B in Clarksville.

A $150 deposit holds your place in this program. The remainder of the fee is due 60 days prior to the start of the class.

Please call or email me with any questions .

Virtual Classes

Virtual Classes

These 4 week classes are offered as virtual online learning opportunities. They are designed to provide a complete learning experience at a slower, more measured pace and without the added expense of travel and lodging. Classes are limited to 10 participants. Payment and registration through Paypal. Here's how they work: Each participant will receive via email a materials list, reading list and general information about how the class will be conducted. A private blog, accessible only by participants, will be created. Each week on Friday a class assignment and lesson will be posted along with other pertinent information like examples of exercises or other concepts, video demos and written materials pertaining to that week's topic. Students will complete their assignments and post them to the blog for discussion/critique by the following Wednesday . The instructor will comment on each student post before the next week's lesson as well as respond to questions and comments by students. In order to fully participate students will need to be able to upload digital images to the blog. For those unfamiliar with this process, we'll provide a tutorial and walk you through it by telephone if necessary.

Drawing and Painting Trees
February 19- March 19, 2010
$160 - 4 week course
Class limited to 10 students-2 spots left

For landscape artists, trees are arguably the most important raw material of our craft and art. Their very individual character, their attitude as living beings within the landscape make them a source of endless fascination and challenge for the artist. Artists in the 19th century routinely sketched and painted studies of these sentinels of nature in order to understand their structure as well as their artistic bearing. These drawings and studies were then used to create larger studio works.

Winter and early spring are a perfect time to undertake a study of trees. Their structures are visible as at no other time! John Carlson, author of Carlson’s Guide to Landscape Painting (the bible of landscape painting) rightly tells us that the way to learn to paint trees is by “much drawing of trees”. Through drawing and observation, we will learn to paint not only their anatomy, but their line, character, and the emotions they can inspire.

Topics covered in the class will include:

- a study of examples of 19th century drawings and painted studies

-materials and techniques for drawing in graphite and charcoal

-the structure of different species of trees, varieties of outlines and shapes against the sky

-making painting studies of individual and groups of trees

-linear and atmospheric perspective of trees

-incorporating studies into studio works

After registration each student will receive a materials list and a written class notebook via email.
